Rapid sensory methods provide information about how similar or different samples are and descriptions of their characteristics. These methods are faster and more cost-effective than quantitative descriptive analysis, which is recommended for sets of samples where detailed, in-depth knowledge of the sensory properties is required.

Two methods that are available for this type of assessment: Pivot©Profile and Projective Mapping (or Napping©).

Pivot©Profile is a rapid, frequency-based descriptive method that provides insights into the characteristics of a set of products using a panel with extensive product knowledge.

Projective Mapping offers a holistic way of differentiating multiple samples from one another. This method is recommended for smaller sample numbers.

Capability

Affinity Labs employs a team of highly qualified sensory scientists who each hold a diploma in Applied Sensory and Consumer Science from the University of California, Davis. They are skilled in all aspects of statistical analysis and experimental design and work with clients to select the right method to achieve a successful outcome.

Our state-of-the-art sensory laboratory is equipped to ISO standards with individual sensory booths to ensure a suitable environment for conducting assessments. Separate panel and meeting rooms allow for in-depth discussion of products with assessors. The laboratory uses data acquisition software for flexible set-up of tests and collection of data.

Our highly trained, in-house sensory panel is made up of individuals whose sole function is to act as a sensory assessor, with projects carried out throughout the year. Assessors are drawn from the local community and recruited based on their sensory skills and product consumption experience. They are screened for their sensory acuity and ability to discriminate differences and undergo regular training and assessment.

Outcomes

Rapid descriptive sensory methods allow producers to gain an understanding of the main differences and similarities among a set of samples and can support decisions regarding prototypes or processing variables that are to desirable targets.
